Moscow Zoo is the oldest in Russia. It was opened in 1864. It is also one of the largest zoos in the world, it covers the territory of 22 hectares. The zoo is situated in the centre of Moscow, near the Garden Ring. From its first days, it became extremely popular with both children and adults.
Today the zoo is home to 1,000 species and more than 6,000 animals from all over the world: giraffes and elephants, bears and tigers, swans and flamingoes. For many animals cages are replaced by enclosures which recreate animals’ natural environment. This gives a better lifestyle to the animals and a more realistic experience to the visitors.
Moscow Zoo consists of two parts (the Old and the New) which are connected by a bridge over the street. In the zoo, you can walk and watch the wildlife, see a dolphin show, go on rides and take part in various activities and festivals. The zoo also has beautiful gardens, as well as innovative zoo buildings which house many animals in winter.
